Students are required to be employed or placed at an internship site while they are enrolled in the course, as credit for the internship can only be awarded during the concurrent period.

This requirement ensures that students are applying the knowledge and skills gained in the classroom directly to real-world practice in a professional setting.

In order to fulfill the MOA Internship course requirement, students must complete a total of 210 hours if they are employed at a site, or 180 hours if they are serving as volunteers.

Q: I have enrolled in MOA 50, and I don’t know how the course is structured?

Q: Will I be responsible to finding an internship myself or will GCC assign me to an internship location?

A: All students must find their own internships. Internships must be in a health care setting such as a medical, dental or physical therapy office.

You are not required to obtain an internship as a billing coder if that is your area of study. The requirement is to work in a health care setting as described above.

The GCC MOA department is not responsible for finding internships for students. This means now is the time to start searching for your internships so you have one in place at the end of August, by the time class starts. Having an internship is a requirement for this course,

We understand it may take some time to obtain an internship however, if you do not have an internship by the last day to drop this course, you will receive a “not pass” for MOA 50.

Q: Where do I start to look for an internship?

A: First, explore internship opportunities that match your career goal and complement your academic major.

Then determine 2-3 fields that match your interests, skills, and values. You can even start by asking in your own doctor’s office or your son or daughter’s doctor’s office.

If you don’t know what you are interested in, go to the GCC Career Center Career Center (Links to an external site.) and schedule an appointment to have your resume and cover letter reviewed by a Career Counselor. Most internships require a resume and cover Letter with your application.

We also have a contact in the GCC counseling department. Contact Sharis Davoodi in our career counseling in department. Send her an email and see if she can assist in finding an internship.

Q: What if I don’t have a resume and cover letter?

Q: The course indicates 3 units, does that mean it would only be a 3 hour internship per week?

Units & Hours

You may earn from 1 and up to 3 units of credit for this course. Per the Title V California Code of Educational Regulations for Community Colleges, credit is given for work experience as follows-

To Receive:	You must work:
1 Credit Unit	60 hours if unpaid	70 hours if paid
2 Credit Units	120 hours if unpaid	150 units if paid
3 Credit Units	180 hours if unpaid	210 hours if paid
1 Credit Units	4 informational Zoom interviews	To be confirmed, still working on the details.

*Any paid internship requires an original social security card and ID.

Q: Does the internship have to be unpaid? What if I got a job in a medical or dental office and I got paid, would this job count toward my internship for MOA 50?

Learning to write a proper resume and cover letter opens a world of possibilities for volunteer opportunities, part-time/full-time work, university admissions, scholarship opportunities, internships/apprenticeships, etc. These skills are in high demand especially with the “new” job market we are currently in.

Mastering Interview Skills can be useful throughout one’s lifetime. Whether it is for a job, promotion, internship, scholarship and/or graduate/professional school. Virtual Interviewing and phone interviews have their own strategies and nuances.

Having an active and positive LinkedIn profile is the new networking normal. Companies and hiring managers are looking to see if applicants have a professional online engaged presence.

Job and Internship Searching has taken on a whole new meaning. Individuals need to learn strategies, tips and resources that will assist them with obtaining a full, part-time job or internship.
